Thane activists want free restrooms for squatters

March 29, 2020

THANE: Few alert residents from Thane have drawn the attention of the authorities towards the possible spread of any infections due to hundreds of residents staying on footpaths and defecating in the open in various parts of the city.

The Thane unit of Congress has appealed to the municipal administration to immediately keep a check on these squatters who are known to be staying on the roadsides and often end up dirtying the surrounding by defecating in the open thus risking possibilities of infection. The team has requested the administration to allow these people to use the public restrooms free of cost as they presently relieve themselves in the open.

"There is a huge number of people who stay on the footpaths or have taken refuge in Thane over the last few days. These people eat, sleep on the pavements and, of late, are also seen defecating in the open which could pose a health hazard. I have requested the municipal corporation to allow them to use the public restrooms without charging any money," said Rahul Pingale, an office-bearer of the Thane Congress party.

Meanwhile, the municipal administration said they are already working on fumigating several parts of the city and have also prepared a schedule for the same.
