The project will take four years to be completed, estimated to cost Rs 13095 crore. Of the 29 km, 2.2 km will be underground and the rest will be elevated.

The proposed 29km metro with 22 stations is projected to have a daily ridership of 5.76 lakh. Fares will range from Rs 17 to Rs 104, officials said.

The metro would run between New Thane metro station and old city area. It will connect Wadala to Kasarvadavli Metro at two places at the New Thane station and Dongripada. It will also connect Mumbai Metro Line 5 (Thane-Bhiwandi- Kalyan) at Majiwada junction.

The roofs of the metro stations have ample space and can fit about 10 lakh solar panels which will provide about 65 per cent of the energy requirements.

In all, this intracity metro line is expected to not only help citizens travel to different ends of the city but also aid those travelling to the neighbouring cities through its intermodal system, said, officials.

The proposed metro project, implemented by the Maha Metro on behalf of the Thane Municipal Corporation.
