2 Flyovers Thrown Open For Easy Commute Between Mumbai, Thane

THANE: Good news for motorists who commute between Mumbai and Thane daily. They can now use the internal flyovers constructed over LBS Marg near Castle Mill and MG Road at Naupada to beat the slow-moving traffic on Eastern Expressway Highway due to the ongoing Metro and Kopri bridge widening works.

The two bridges, which were part of a three-intercity flyover project planned and executed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), were thrown open for motorists by Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray on Sunday. The third flyover, near Vandana Talkies, was opened for public use last year.

“Motorists can now use the three bridges as an alternative route to exit the city limits faster as compared to the time taken by using the existing highway, which is currently clogged due to movement of heavy vehicles and ongoing Metro and Kopri bridge widening work,” said a senior official from Thane municipal body’s public works department.

The internal flyovers will also help decongest the traffic junctions below them that see nearly 7,500 passenger car units during peak hours. Noise and view barriers have been installed on the two newly inaugurated bridges; signages will be set up soo, said officials.

While the Naupada flyover, which is 647 metres long and 7.6 metres wide, connects Jijau garden with Hari Niwas crossing the busy Ice Factory junction, the unidirectional Castle Mill flyover is 1,347 metres long and 7.5 metres wide. The Y-shaped bridge takes off from Gokul Nagar and lands at Khopat, while another arm bifurcates over the junction to land at Jail Talao. The Jail talao landing is likely to be thrown open after a few days, said an official.
