TMC To Fast Track Pod Car Project, Study Feasibility Report

08 January, 2019

THANE: The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is likely to fast track implementation of the Personal Rapid Transit System (PRTS) or pod cars project in city and is likely to study the economic viability of the same soon.

The development comes following a presentation of the project by commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal before Shiv Sena leader Aditya Thackeray and Thane guardian minister Eknath Shinde on Monday about the project. Officials from the corporation said that Thackeray was impressed by the project and has suggested the administration fast track the process for implementing it.

“The Sena leader has suggested the corporation analyse the economic viability of the project and present a proposal before the general body next month,” said the official. As per the initial concept, each of these cabs or pod cars will accommodate 4-6 passengers and will run point to point at a speed of 40kmph. The project will be executed in multiple phases and the first phase will entail connecting the internal city and metro IV stations within Thane.

The first phase of the route will be 34kms while the entire network spanning 100kms in total.

Officials said these air-cooled pod cars could possibly be self-propelled and run on designated single tracks either at grade or on an elevated level.

The project is expected to cost around Rs 2,500 cr.
