THANE: Over 800 abandoned and junked vehicles were cleared off Thane streets in a matter of ten days freeing up arterial roads for speedy traffic movement here, the traffic police informed on Monday.
Wagle estate in Thane saw 87 vehicles abandoned while Kolsewadi in Kalyan had 94 khataaras dumped on roadsides, which incidentally is the highest volume compared to the entire of Thane police commissionerate area.
Most vehicles were not in working condition and were lying at the roadsides with a thick dust layer enveloped while many others had their spares removed leaving only their skeletal remains, officials informed.
Balasaheb Patil, deputy commissioner of police, Thane traffic said they had appealed owners starting April 19 and also posted notices on these abandoned vehicles to be removed. While few owners removed the vehicles on their own, the rest were removed by the police and taken to a dumping site.
“Around 814 vehicles were found abandoned of which we removed 599 while the rest were shifted by their respective owners till date. These vehicles were not just causing hindrance to free movement of the traffic but were also posing risks as they attracted anti-socail elements also,” said Patil.
