Home > Womens World > Do it yourself - Cushion Covers

Very often we depend on the style offered by the home design stores for what they offer us in terms of colours, patterns, textures, and shapes to order the cushioned comfort of our homes. Just think what if we were to accept these trendy ways and add a personal touch to them before they occupy place of pride in our domains?? Well, here is a wonderful idea - easy and cost effective and let me tell you - you are just going to love it!!

Haven't you got a lot of family photographs tucked away in some corner of the almirah, waiting their turn to be turned out? Aren't you tired of changing the pictures in those two beautiful photo frames - the only ones that you possess? Don't you wish that some pictures like those of your wedding, always remain well within reach to bring back some cherished memories and the slim you?! Well, here you are then... follow these simple steps and Voila!!

• Existing cushion covers
• A sheet of clear plastic - the kind you use for your dining table.
• Plain fabric that matches your cushion covers in colour and texture.
• Scissors
• Sewing machine
• Measuring tape
• Thread of matching colour.
• Needle
• Marking chalk/ pencil
• A one-inch Velcro strip.
• Personal/ family photographs - both black-n-white as well as coloured.

• Choose the plain fabric of a colour that highlights the cover you are
using it for.
• Small colored rings - the size of tiny earrings can also be used as an
innovative border around the plastic jacket in addition to the fabric
of course!
• Use a mix of photographs - in some black-n-white and in some coloured.
• Use some satin ribbon instead of plain fabric. It saves you the measuring
and cutting time and looks a lot nicer!

Step 1: Depending on the size and shape of your cushion cover, mark out a central area leaving a             11/2 " border along the edges.

Step 2: Using the measuring tape, measure the length of material required along this border.

Step 3: Neatly cut a one-inch strip (ribbon) of the measured length from the plain fabric chosen for the cushion cover.

Step 4: Now measure the area within this border and cut out the plastic according to this measure.

Step 5: Stitch the plastic on to the cushion cover on three sides leaving one side open.

Step 6: Sew the plain fabric ribbon (you just cut in step 3) along the edges covering them neatly.

Step 7: Sew the ribbon along the open edge also giving the plastic jacket a uniform appearance.

Step 8: Now stitch the Velcro strip along the open edge.

Step 9: Your cushion cover is now ready with its plastic jacket. Firmly insert as many
photographs as seem fit into this jacket and seal it with Velcro.

Your beautifully hand crafted cushion cover is now ready for your cushions and will make an individualistic statement sure to impress your guests!
