General lighting is an essential determinant of the success of a proposed décor. A variety of wall fixtures, recessed fixtures, floor mounted up lighters, fluorescent and incandescent tubes and bulbs, and table lamps can work wonders to enliven the mood of the décor accentuating the forms, colors and textures prevalent.

Light is used to create visual interest by highlighting surface textures, shapes and creating shadows. Good use of light also reduces the weightiness of walls making a room feel open. Lighting should address both the functional and decorative needs in each room in your home. After determining the activities that take place in each room, establish what lighting elements will be necessary to accomplish the job. Careful planning will give you the best results for both attributes.

Here are some essential dos and don’ts to guide you through:

Make sure that the height of the light fitting – tube light, chandelier is below that of the fan.

Provide your accent lighting with dimmers. It further alters the ambience to effect different     moods.

Create a balance between light and shadows. Heavy shadows can look dull and morbid while     uniformly bright lighting can look too stark.

Make sure that indirect lighting always bounces off the walls and ceiling.

Use spotlights to highlight art objects and paintings.

Provide for extra plug points at strategic locations in the rooms and in bathrooms and kitchen

so that your appliances can be easily plugged in.

Make sure that the light is distributed evenly in all rooms.

Make sure that the light is evenly distributed even in a particular room.

Provide some points with two-way switches in a large room for convenient access.

Fit bulbs at eye level. They hurt the eye.

Provide too many light fittings in the room as they add on to the costs of cooling and heating..

Allow electrical wiring and telephone wiring to run in the same conduit.

Use too many types of equipment in a single plug point at a given time.

Light up all fixtures in a room at the same time. Alternate sequentially for mood variation and energy     conservation.

Provide to many halogens in a room, as they tend to generate a lot of heat.
