Are you a creature of habit who’s stayed with something faithfully just because you’ve found that it suited you ten, twenty years ago? Finders are not keepers, and your make up can make you look older and dated. Make up on older skins needs to be skillfully applied and blended. And never ever overdo anything.

Using white concealer to disguise dark circles under the eyes can make you look like an owl.

Heavy, thick, too light foundation draws attention to pores and settles in lines.

A heavy hand with powder emphasizes dryness and wrinkles.

Overdrawn, too dark eyebrows look incongruous. Over plucked ones give you a perpetually surprised look.

Mauve, blue, purple eye shadows are far too harsh. Shimmering ones accentuate wrinkles.

Blue liners went out with the sixties. Heavy black liner is too severe.

Thick coats of mascara can clog lashes. Jet black can make lashes look hard and spiky.

Too heavy blushed add years. Powdered products settle in creases.

Bright red lips are no-nos. Matte lipsticks can be drying.

Mix a little foundation with your concealer and apply gently under the eyes with a square tufted brush or sponge tipped applicator.

Semi matte or light tinted creamy formulas work better, making the complexion more dewy. Look for light diffusing make up that reflects and soften fine lines.

Apply very sparingly with a large brush, or don't use at all.

Fill in brows lightly with feathery strokes using a dark brown eye pencil.

Brown, beige, taupe, khakhi shadows are more flattering. Use shimmer only to highlight the brow line and lift the eyes.

Use dark brown liner close to the lashes to remove clumps. Use just a touch on the lower lashes.

Use cream blusher only on the apples of the cheeks, blending gently upwards.

Color should balance not overwhelm the face. Use a lip liner to prevent bleeding and fill in with a matching brown, brownish red or fuschia.
