The FAQs on Domain Names

What is Domain name?
A domain name is textual representation of a numeric number (IP address) used to locate specific areas of the Internet. It is easier to remember a name than a series of numbers.

What is a top-level Domain?
A top level domain (TLD) is the extension that is attached at the end of your domain name.
For example, in yourname.com, . com is the top level domain. The two types of top level domains available right now are global ( gTLD) and country code (CCTLD). The gTLD's available are: .com (though intended for commercial use, it is the most popular and well - known extension), .net (intended for use by networks) and. Org ( intended for organizations ). The other gTLDs, like .edu (for education), mil (for military) and .gov (for government), are not available to the public. There are over 200 CCTLD's available.

What is a URL?
A URL (uniform resource locator) is your full address on the Internet. For example, http://www.yourname.com includes the prefix http://www., and the TLD extension.com as well as the actual domain name. When you type a URL into your browser's location field, it takes you to a specific location/site on the Internet.

What is an IP address?
IP (Internet Protocol) address is the numerical equivalent
to your domain name. It is easier to remember a name (that may have numbers in it) than the string of numbers that make up the IP address (for example, 216.25.40.228). Without a number assigned, a domain name is not accessible on the Internet

What is DNS?
DNS (domain name server) is the server connected to the Internet that translates the URL/ domain name into the IP address to direct you to the correct location on the Internet.

What is Domain Parking?
Every domain name has to be directed to a computer server somewhere. When someone types in your new domain name, they need to be directed to some location on the Internet. Until you get Web hosting, it will direct your domain name to the server. It will display a page that says your newdomainname.com is coming soon. And you can post your Internet business card on this page.

What is a Server?
