Dr.
Vikram Lele
Medical Advisor - Spectrum Nuclear Medicine Center.
Q.
Tell us something about yourself ?
A. I am Dr. Vikram Lele M.D.(Med), DRM, DNB,
Chief of Nuclear Medicine, Jaslok Hospital and research
center, with over 15 years experience in this field
and will be advising the center.
Q.
What is nuclear medicine?
A. Nuclear medicine is a specialty, which uses
radioisotopes for diagnosis and management of various
diseases. An injection if the isotope is given and photographs
of different organs are taken with the help of special
equipment called Gamma camera. This yields vital information
about function of different organs such as their blood
supply, metabolism, excretion function, etc.
Q. How is nuclear
medicine different from other modalities like CT scan,
MRI and Sonography?
A. These other modalities give important information
about Structure of the body and its organs. They do
not give any information about the function of these
organs. Nuclear medicine provides this information,
and is the only modality that tells at what capacity
the organs are working, how severe is the abnormality,
what is the prognosis of the patient.
Q. Why a nuclear medicine center in Thane?
A. Thane has facilities for CT scan, MRI and
Sonography. It has no center doing Nuclear Medicine
scans. Patients from Thane have to travel to Mumbai
to do thyroid scans, kidney scans, bone scans and heart
Thallium scans among others. The need was felt to provide
Thane residents with an advanced state of the art Nuclear
medicine center that would perform all the nuclear medicine
procedures available in Mumbai. Hence Spectrum Nuclear
Medicine Center was established
Q. What facilities are
available at the Spectrum Nuclear Medicine center?
A.
This center is equipped with a modern state of the art
GE millenium MPR camera system with which all scans
can be performed. The center also provides therapy for
Thyrotoxicosis, painful bone metastases and painful
joint disorders. The center is manned by well trained
Nuclear Medicine physicians with large experience in
this field.
Q.
Whom can be contacted in case of emergency?
A.
Dr. Mukesh Jain, will be available 24 hours to do all
the scans. He has trained at the Jaslok Hospital and
is well experienced in the performance and reporting
of all Nuclear Medicine scans.
