Painful
wisdom teeth / Problem with wisdom teeth
Wisdom teeth (your third molars) are the last teeth
to come into the mouth. There are chances that they
may not emerge at all or most often, they are impacted
or trapped in the jawbone and gums, because of inadequate
space in the mouth. Our jaws are smaller than those
of early humans, who needed larger jaws and more teeth
for their tougher diet. We don't need that extra chewing
power anymore. Therefore, in case of "impacted" or
problematic wisdom teeth, removal may be the best
option.
Most
people have four wisdom teeth, one in each corner
of the mouth, but each tooth can be at a different
stage of emergence and position of emergence at a
given point of time. Since wisdom teeth develop over
a period of many years, harmful changes in your mouth
due to problematic wisdom teeth may be gradual. But
these changes could result in sudden and severe pain
A
dental evaluation consisting of examination of the
teeth and x-rays to assess the health of your teeth
will help to pinpoint any existing problem. Based
on this evaluation, your dentist may recommend surgery
to remove wisdom teeth and eliminate these problems
or to protect your mouth from future problems.
The
space left by the removal of wisdom teeth heals and
eventually closes. Replacement is not generally required.
Removal does not cause any damage to the other teeth
or to the eyesight. Loss of a wisdom tooth does not
compromise chewing or biting habits.
