Implants
Dental implants are highly effective, advanced natural
looking replacements for missing tooth or teeth.
Dental implants may be recommended in the following
cases
- For
replacement of a missing tooth/teeth
- If
the existing partial / full denture is uncomfortable
and irritates the gums.
- If
the existing partial / fulldenture causes pain
while eating.
- If
the existing partial / full denture fits badly
and slips at times.
- If
the existing partial / full denture fits is not
cosmetically appealing to the patient.
- If
the remaining teeth are not strong enough to support
bridgework
- If
the patient does not want to involve healthy remaining
teeth for supporting the bridgework.
Placing
of dental implants involve a special two step surgery
First surgery - The dentist places anchors
(screws, cylinders, blades usually made of titianium)
into jawbone. There is a waiting period of 3-6 month
where the implants "take hold" or osseo integrate
with the jawbone.
Second surgery - This is carried out when the
osseo integration is complete and the anchors are
held firmly, in the jawbone. The dentist attaches
abutments (metal connectors usually made of titianium)
to the anchors.
Third surgery - After the jawbones and gums
have healed which may take upto six month the patient
it ready for new teeth called a 'prosthesis,' which
are fixed to the abutments.
Dental
implants require expertise on the part of the dentist
and commitment to oral hygiene on the part of the
patient only then can the implant be termed as successful.
