Swollen & bleeding gums

Red, swollen & tender gums, gums that bleed while brushing, gums that are separated from the teeth, pus oozing from the gums are all sure signs of GUM DISEASE.
How Gum Disease Starts
Gum disease, medically called as periodental disease or periodontitis is the major cause of tooth loss in adults.

In Health - Gums are coral pink in color. They are firmly attached to the teeth and cover, their roots and the supporting bone underneath. Thus they firmly anchor the teeth in place. The early stage of the gum disease, where only the gums are involved is called gingivitis

Treatment of gum disease
Stage 1 - Gingivitis can be treated by professional cleaning and scaling procedures.
Stage 2 - Periodontitis may require flap (gum) surgery

Stage 1.
It starts with the formation of a soft, sticky colourless film of bacteria that constantly forms on the teeth. This is called as Plaque. If the plaque is not cleaned by brushing, it goes on building up. The bacteria present in the plaque release toxins and enzymes which irritate the gums. Plaque then hardens to form calculus or tartar. At the cost of a receding gumline, the calculus deposits around the tooth increase. The gums become inflamed, irritated and infected.

Stage 2.
If gingivities is left untreated the infection spreads to the bone surrounding the tooth. Pus gets formed, gums get detached from the tooth resulting in gum pockets. With receding gum levels, the supporting bone too begins to erode. This stage of the disease is called as periodontitis or Pyorrhea. The tooth become loose, and may be lost.

Prevention of gum disease
1) Brushing - Brush your teeth twice a day. Hold a soft medium brush at the gum line at 45 degree angle. Brush in a circular motion to massage the gums and an up and down motion to dislodge plaque.
2) Flossing - Daily flossing helps to remove plaque from between teeth.
3) Rinse - Rinse thoroughly with water after every meal. A mouthrinse can be used everyday for a fresh breath.
