Crown
& Bridge
Each tooth, like a member of a team, helps the other
teeth, and surrounding - do their job.
One missing Tooth can cause the pistion of other teeth
to change. The space left by the missing tooth may
cause some teeth to tilt forward, or opposing teeth
to move down. A missing tooth can also create spaces
between your teeth, changing your bite and smile.
Shifting
and drifting teeth could lead to changes in your chewing
muscles, b
ones
and joints, making chewing difficult or painful. Teeth
that have moved out of their normal position can tip
over and become hard to clean. This can lead to tooth
decay and gum disease. Eventually there is bone loss,
the tooth becomes loose and falls out. This chain
of events can be prevented by crowns and bridge treatment.
After your evaluation, your dentist may recommend
a crown to protect or restore your tooth, or fixed
bridge to replace missing teeth. Materials used may
be porcelain (ceramic) gold, other metals or a combination.
A
crown (often called a cap) is an artificial cover
that restores a decayed or damaged tooth to its normal
shape and size. It is useful for protecting the structure
of a tooth that is cracked or broken. A crown is also
used to
- Change
the shape of a tooth
- To
correct a bite problem
- To
correct a cosmetic problem
- To
replace existing broken or poor fitting crowns.
- To
protect teeth with large fillings
- To
protect a tooth which has undergone root canal
treatment.
A
Fixed Bridge can replace one or more missing teeth.
It consists of one or more replacement teeth (artificial
teeth) attached to crowns that are placed on two or
more surrounding SUPPORT TEETH
A
fixed bridge serves the following functions
1) Replaces missing teeth
2) Restores normal function
3) Restores normal position of your bite
4) Prevents over eruption of opposing teeth
5) Prevents drift / tipping of adjacent teeth
6) Prevents gum pocket formation
7) Prevents decay
8) prevents bone loss
Thus a fixed bridge helps in restoring and preserving
a complete set of teeth in the mouth.
