Your
Child and His Teeth
With proper personal as well as professional dental
care, your child can maintain a healthy set of teeth
In humans, there are two kinds of teeth -
1. Primary or baby teeth or milk teeth - 20 in number
2. Permanent teeth - 32 in number
Teething
is sometimes accompanied with vomiting, diarrhea,
pain sore gums, fever etc.
Importance
of primary teeth
Primary teeth should be given the best of care since
they assist in chewing and biting of food; contribute
to facial development and expression; preserve the
space for incoming permanent teeth and help in speech.
In case any of the primary teeth get decayed, they
should be filled immediately.
If the decay is allowed to spread/ increase; the primary
tooth may get infected. An infected primary tooth
may affect the developing permanent tooth.
In
cases where the defective tooth cannot be treated
property; (by a filling or by root canal treatment)
it should be removed. A 'space maintainer' should
be immediately inserted, it will preserve the space
for the permanent tooth. This prevents the permanent
tooth to erupt out of position or not erupt at all
due to lack of space. If the permanent teeth are irregular
or malformed, brushing may pose a problem for your
child leading to tartar, tooth decay and gum disease.
They also interfere with chewing, good speech habits
and appearance. Your dentist may recommend orthodontic
treatment in such situations.
Some
irregularities are best treated when the child is
very young.
Permanent
teeth should be examined as soon as they emerge, for
early detection of cavities or other defects.
Tips
for a healthy set of teeth for your child:
- A
well balanced diet including green vegetables,
milk fruit etc. is important to obtain the required
amount of calcium, phosphorus etc. for developing
teeth and jaw bones.
- Avoid
surgery and starchy foods
- Using
a toothbrush as soon as the first teeth have appeared
in the mouth.
- Every
child should be taken to the dentist when he is
between 2-3 years of age for the first time, or
earlier in case of nay dental problem.
- Bottle
feeding should be stooped after 1 1/2 -2 years
of age.
- Preventive
treatments like PIT & FISSURE SEALANTS and floride
treatment should be instituted.
In pit & fissure sealants, the grooves and pits
present on the permanent teeth are coated with
a special 'sealant', thereby rendering them 'non-sticky'
to food debris.
In flouride treatment' flouride - an important
mineral for strong teeth, is supplied to the teeth
on the form of flavoured gels etc. This treatment
makes the tooth enamel strong and more resistant
to decay.
- Using
quality products for dental care ( e.g. fluoridated
toothpaste for growing children) Visiting a dentist
at least twice a year.
When
your child is old enough, explain to him the importance
of dental care for over all health. Your child must
consider dental care as a routine part of normal living
!
