Bleaching:
The bleaching refers to restoration of normal color
to a tooth by decolorizing the stain present with
the help of bleaching agents. A Tooth is discolored
due to:
- Trauma
: Trauma to a tooth by a fall / blow resulting
in direct impact to the nerve causes decomposition
of pulp (nerve) Tissue. Hemoglobin present breaks
down with the formation of coloured like hematin,
hemosiderin in discoloration.
- Medicaments
: like tetracyclne group of antibiotics, some
root canal medicaments tend to stains teeth.
- Filling
materials: Large silver amalgam fillings, gold
crowns, old composite fillings etc. produce stains
ranging from state grey to dark gray to brown.
- Hereditary
diseases: Like congenital poprhyria, endemic flourosis,
etc. cause staining removed by bleaching.
- Following
root canal treatment
- Extrinsic
(due to tabacco, coffee, tea, smoking etc.): These
can be generally removed by scaling and polishing
during tooth prophylaxis
Bleaching
agents used are
superoxol (30% hydrogenperoxide)
sodium perborate
carbamide peroxide 20%
Homebleaching
: The procedure is simple, painless and can be done
at home by the patient himself Bleaching trays (custom
made) are provided alongwith the bleaching agent to
the patient. Relevant instructions are given. The
patient uses the bleaching agent overnight. With constant
monitoring, the bleaching is generally completed in
3-4 session. Tooth shade is lightened by 3-4 sessions.
Tooth shade is lightened by 3-4 times the original
shade.
Clinic
Bleaching : The procedure is done in the clinic
under supervision of the dentist. This is indicated
for certain special cases.
