Institute of Management Studies was the late Mr. Nagesh Raghunath Rane’s vision for the future. Born in Karwar, South Karnataka on the 6th of November, 1935, he was educated in Hubli, Dharwar. A Masters’ in Economics and English, he started his teaching career in the year of 1964.

He taught English in Mumbai’s HR College of Commerce & Economics till 1970 and then joined IIM(A) as part of the Written Analysis and Communication (WAC) Department. By 1972, he had started teaching Effective Business Communication through correspondence. It was his experience at IIM(A) that helped him gauge the growing need for management education in the changing business scenario of the 70s.

With a keen desire to help students make successful careers in management, he started training them for management school entrance examinations. In 1977, he started IMS on a table space in the office of a very supportive close friend, Prof. Karve, who was a CA by profession. His excellent communication skills, a charismatic personality and the generosity of spirit that he was known for, were the only aides that he had.

An unerring eye for talent and capability lead to the development of an IMS trained, peerless team of intelligent, comitted and highly motivated IIM graduates. He even encouraged and guided some of these students of his to set-up independent businesses of their own. INFAC, CREDENCE & QUANTUM LINKS – all highly successful business ventures – were born of this vision.
