McDonald's opened its first
restaurant in Thane on March 12, 2000. It is located
in Thane (W) close to the station on Gokhale Road.
It is one of the few stand-alone McDonald's restaurants
in western India. A one-storey structure with a terrace,
it has a special area for conducting birthday parties.
There is also a takeaway counter for those on the
move looking for a quick bite.
The
opening of this McDonald's was a fun filled and joyous
event for Thane and McDonald's alike. The day was
marked with a treat for children from Aasraa - an
NGO in Thane (E). Then accompanied by McDonald's mascots,
Ronald McDonald and Hamburglar, the children participated
in a parade of horse carriages that began at the Masunda
talao and ended outside the newly opened restaurant.

Thane
has developed into a self-sufficient township over
the past few years. Recognizing its potential for
future growth, McDonald's thought it to be ideal for
opening its restaurant, thus bringing the unique eating
out experience that we offer to the discerning Thaneite.

McDonald's
offers its customer a range of vegetable, chicken
and fish products, which include burgers, puffs, French
fries, thick shakes, soft serves and fruit pies.
Respecting
the sentiments of the local people, McDonald's had
committed to never serve beef or pork or any of
its products in India even before it opened its
first restaurant in the country.
There
is complete segregation of our veg and non-veg products
right from the procurement stage through storage to
cooking and serving them to our customers. All our
products are fried in 100% pure vegetable oil
and we have gone as far as to develop an eggless mayonnaise
for our vegetarian clients. In addition to that, our
soft serves and thick shakes too are eggless.

At
present, there are 34 McDonald's restaurants in India.
McDonald's plan to take the count up to 80 by the
end of 2003 and expand in to 3 other cities.

McDonald's
offers themed birthday parties and also has a specially
decorated area in its restaurants for the same. A
dedicated hostess conducts the party, which includes
games with prizes from McDonald's. The current theme
is "Wonderlamp" Birthday Bashes.

McDonald's
believes in giving back to the community that it works
in. To that effect the restaurants work closely with
local bodies, for example in Thane, McDonald's joined
hands with the YMCA, Thane to clean up Thane railway
station on occasion of Gandhi Jayanti last year. Volunteers
from McDonald's swept clean the station along with
those from YMCA.
This
year, McDonald's Thane is supporting the Thane Municipal
Corporation for the Pulse Polio programme in order
to make Thane 'Polio Free'. There was an immunization
booth set up outside the restaurant for the whole
day on January 27, 2002.
In
addition to this, we have instituted an inter-school
performing arts competition, McDonald's Spotlight
in 1998. This competition has events like singing,
dancing, speaking and one-act plays. Now in its 4th
year, the participation has grown to over 90 schools
from Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane and Pune.
In
2000, we partnered with the Nehru Science Centre to
bring to the school children on Mumbai an Inter-School
Science Quiz Contest. In 2001, the 2nd year of McDonald's
association with the Quiz, 180 schools from Mumbai
participated.
