Lagaan

Cast: Aamir Khan, Gracy Singh, Paul Blackthorne, Rachel Shelley
Director: Ashutosh Gowariker
Producer: Aamir Khan

L agaan (the tax) is a story of triumph and tragedy. It is about the spirit of a handful of villagers, of how they tide over a difficult situation and survive. The story is set in the 1890s, during the period of the British Raj. However neither is the film a true story, nor is it based on the freedom movement.

The place is Champaner, a small farming village in central India. Because of the bad monsoon the farmers are unable to pay the ‘Lagaan’ (crop tax) imposed by the British government.

The British officer in charge of collecting the tax does not listen to villagers pleas. In fact, his shenanigans put the villagers in trouble. The officer orders them to pay the 'Lagaan' of two years together. Then, to appease his warped sense of humor as it were, he lays a difficult condition before them. He conveys to the villagers that if they were able to fulfill the condition, he would excuse them from paying 'Lagaan' forever. However, if they fail, they would have to pay a fine in addition to the 'Lagaan'!

This challenge is taken up by a young villager (Aamir Khan). How he manages to fulfill this almost impossible job is what 'Lagaan' is all about

Music of this film is composed by A R Rahman and it's song are already on the top charts.
