Who's the biggest moneymaker of them all?

Aishwarya or Karisma? The figures we've got tell it all

It's a game of hits and misses. Some are likely to come out on top, others are likely to get burned.

But there's no business like show business. Especially if we're talking numbers. And it's not just their films that bring home the bhaji. Stage shows, TV appearances and endorsements add quite a bit to their already-substantial income.

Here's looking at our Actors and Actresses No 1 to 5.

Actress No 1 to 5
At the very outset, we'd like to make it clear - according to the distributors we've spoken to, heroines don't really affect the market price of a film. But if we're still crunching numbers, here are Bollywood's hottest women:

1&2 Karisma Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai

Films They stand on the same level. Both charge approximately one crore per film, but often have to settle forless.

2000 hasn't been too kind to Karisma. Her big films, including Chal Mere Bhai and Hum to Mohabbat Karega flopped, and the moderate success of Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge and Fiza haven't affected her saleability at all.

But then, her price hasn't dipped either. 2001 will see her commanding the same price, and her move to more 'meaningful' cinema with Shyam Benegal's Zubeidaa only enhances her image as an actress willing to experiment.

It was a good year for Aishwarya. Josh was a moderate hit, so we guess that playing Shah Rukh's sister was a risk that paid off . Superhit Mohabbatein continues to play to packed houses. Her Tamil release Kandukondain Kandukondain as well as Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai also did very well. Perhaps that's why the failure of Dhai Akshar Prem Ke hasn't made a dent in her popularity at all.

Stage Shows For a live performance with bhangra-pop star Daler Mehndi, Karisma was reportedly paid a staggering three crores.

A solo Aishwarya show would fetch approximately 40 lakhs for the actress. Paired with Salman Khan in a live performance, her (and his) price is likely to go up.

Advertising In 2000, Karisma is said to have been paid one crore by the Adhikari Brothers for endorsing their SAB TV channel.

Aishwarya was reportedly paid over one crore for endorsing the De Beers diamond this year.

3
Preity Zinta

Films Price-wise, she's hot on the heels of Aishwarya and Karisma, charging close to Rs 75 lakhs.

Her leap in success could be attributed to all the critical and popular acclaim that Kya Kehna, this year's dark horse, won her. The moderate success of Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega also contributed to her new-found appeal. And as a result, her performance in Mission Kashmir was also appreciated.

Advertising Preity was reportedly paid Rs 90 lakhs for a cola commercial.

4
Rani Mukherjee

Films She commands approximately Rs 50 lakhs. It's been a well-balanced year for Rani.

Her flop films, including Hello Brother, Badal and Kahin Pyar Na Ho Jaye were balanced by the slightly better Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega and Hadh Kar Di Aapne.

Stage Shows Rani would charge approximately Rs 40 lakhs for a show.

Advertising Rani was reportedly paid Rs 40 lakhs for her Pepsi contract.

5
Mahima Choudhury

Films Surprisingly, she's fifth on the list, charging just a little under what Rani Mukherjee would make.

Over the last year, her performance in the average grosser Dhadkan was appreciated. She also scored points with the critics for her performance in Deewane and of course the year-end saw her in the average hit Kurukshetra.
