Litterateurs come together at a reader's convention

THANE: Renowned Marathi littérateurs participated in the reader's meet that was organised by Sarvajanik Sharda Vachanalaya at Rajmata Jijabai trust hall in Thane East. Dr. Vijaya Wad, President Maharashtra state Sahitya Sanskruti Mandal was the chief guest who inaugurated the event. Hema Shinde, President of the liabrary, Anjali Lapalikar, Sushila Mahajan Nanal and other members toiled hard to make the event a great success.

In her speech Dr. Wad explained the concept of happiness. "Happiness lies in small things in our everyday life. It's our responsibility to find and enjoy them. With interesting examples Dr. Wad showed that our life is like a half filled glass. Whether to feel happy about the plus points or to worry about the minus points depends upon your attitude."

The highlight of the event was a talk show in which well-known writers Dr. Vinaya Khadpekar, Monika Gajendragadkar, Dr. Vidya Deodhar and Pravin Davne expressed their views about the development of the literary forms such as biography
, story, novel and poetry and whether they are preaching the society. Dr. Khadpekar said, "It's a known fact that society likes to follow the footsteps of great dignitaries. In the past biographies that were written to highlight the life of celebrities and noble, glamorous personalities. But over the years readers have matured enough to accept celebrities as normal human beings with good and cons. She supported her views by adding her experiences while writing the biography of Ahilyabai Holkar, the queen of Indore."

Gajendragadkar is recognised as able story writer. She analyzed the development of Marathi story writing by giving references of well known literary works of distinguished writers. She said, "A story is a beautiful combination of reality and imagination that every writer do according to his temperament. The form of story writing has been evolved through the tradition of oral narration of an incident which aimed entertainment. Gradually story touched more serious issues of life. A classic story establishes a hearty dialogue between the writer and reader. I believe that the urge of writing inspires the writer and though some stories give some message, preaching cannot be the aim of any story. It helps the writer to know his own self."

Dr. Deodhar has done lots of research projects about Marathi literature. "Novel has a wide spectrum and it's most effective form of literature and language is its main strength. The incidents and characters described in a novel can initiate people about current issues and social movements. Its known fact that Bengali novel Anandmath and the song Vande Mataram fired the rage against the British and the freedom fighting movement started in Begal that spread throughout the country. But preaching cannot be the aim of every literary work," insisted Dr. Deodhar. She further added, "Though some of the novels give some message, Marathi writers have enriched this literary form by adding artistic, matured novels. It's interesting to see that in 1873 Salubai Tambvekar, a women from Tamasha artist's family wrote a story to propagate women education in Maharashtra and Yesteryear writer Haribhau Apte's novel Pan Lakshat Kon Gheto showcases the miseries of child- marriage preaching was not the aim of every novel."

Pravin Davne has made his mark as a poet and writer. He said, "Few words and unlimited meaning is the specialty of poetry. It adds humanity to human being. To read classic lyrics is a sanskar," he concluded.

In the last session a youngster's group presented Rasarang, in which they recited choicest poems from Marathi literature.
