THANE: As part of its lake cleaning project, the TMC has decided to clean one its natural lakes. The civic commissioner, along with corporators and the pollution control officer visited Turfe Lake at Kolshet
Speaking about the lake, Kavita Patil the local corporator of the area informed that the Turfe Lake was old and originally fell in the Gram Panchayat area. "We are aware of the present condition of the lake, as locals would use it as a crematorium to dispose off bodies. As a result, we've lost one third of the lake and we feel the need to conserve it," she said.
Patil added that since they have limitations with regard to conservation activity, the TMC had to consider the lake for consideration two years ago. "This is the only lake that is surrounded by plantations, which forms a natural barrier for farming. Several senior citizens would like to visit this area regularly, but as there isn't a compound, which hinders people visiting it," she added.
Civic commissioner Nandkumar Jantre, on his visit to the lake assured that he would look into giving the lake a makeover. "There is no need of cleaning the water as its quality is good. But we have been assured that the lake would get a boundary wall and seating arrangements for visitors," added Patil.
Speaking to Thane Plus, Manisha Pradhan the pollution control officer said that the commissioner had given her department some guidelines regarding the conservation of Turfe Lake. "We are no preparing a plan of action and once approved by the commissioner, we will start work," she said.
Currently, Thane has 35 lakes under the TMC's jurisdiction. Out of these, the TMC began a conservation drive for 11 lakes. Turfe Lake, however, wasn't in their original plan, which was raised by Patil during a meeting. Now, with the TMC taking the lake into consideration, the Turfe Lake is on its way to getting a facelift.
