THANE:
A jilted lover slashed the throat of his 23-year-old
girlfriend in a secluded place along the railway
tracks near Thane station, leading to her death
around 3 pm on Tuesday.
The
youth, who was covered in blood, was immediately
nabbed by locals and handed over to the railway
police.
Baban
Gulabrao Adilkar (26), a resident of Mithaghar
in Mulund (E), confessed to the police that
he was driven into a murderous rage by Rekha
Tonde, whom he claimed to have been romancing
for nearly four years as she repeatedly turned
down his marriage proposals.
On
Tuesday, a determined Adilkar, a daily wage
worker, armed himself with a chopper and called
his girlfriend to Chintamani garden near Mulund
station. The couple then started walking on
the railway tracks towards Thane where he again
proposed marriage.
Tonde,
who worked as a maid in a private firm, is said
to have refused him again. An enraged Adilkar
then took out the chopper and slashed her throat.
He left her dying in a pool of blood along the
tracks.
"Some
local boys from Siddharth Nagar then saw Adilkar
walking towards Thane station with his clothes
covered in blood. They confronted and nabbed
him before he could escape. He was handed over
to the railway police,'' said senior police
inspector Shivaji Dhumal of the Thane GRP.
This
crime of passion is a chilling reminder of a
similar incident in Thane in June 2007 when
one Prashant Pawar, spurned by Sushma Nikam,
stabbed her repeatedly in broad daylight. He
had attempted suicide by jumping into Makmali
Talao. The girl battled for her life for about
two weeks and then died of serious internal
injuries.
"Adilkar
is supposed to have planned to kill himself
but was nabbed before he could do that,'' Dhumal
said. The police said Adilkar was upset with
his girlfriend as she had virtually reduced
him to penury and that he had also sold off
his house for her.
The
crime triggered outrage among Thaneites who
said such incidents revealed the streak of violence
among youths today.
